Department of Plasma Physics was founded at Andronikashvili Institute of Physics in 1960. Since that time many pioneering papers have been created and published in high rating
journals an also monographs of foreign authors published abroad.
For the first time in world literature the published papers were devoted to processes of wave decay and coalescence in plasma. This was completely new word in plasma physics.
In 1970-ies, when there was no perspective of creation of powerful lasers in near future, intense work performed by N. Tsintsadze and his group established unconditional first place
in the world to Georgian scientists. In particular, it was shown by this group that during interaction of strong relativistic electromagnetic waves with dense plasma during heating
soliton wave formation is possible when density rises in field localization area. In these papers completely new physics was shown.
Very important papers were created and published in known foreign journals devoted to photon gas in plasma and longitudinal photons have been discovered.
For description of degenerated Fermi plasma quantum kinetic equations were created for the first time, which gave possibility to describe kinetic effects in metals and semiconductors,
also to study degenerated Fermi objects, such as pulsars and white dwarfs.
By initiative of N. Tsintsadze and support of E. Andronikashvili right after creation of the department experimental investigations in plasma physics were started. It is impossible to list
all those experimental results which have been achieved in department of plasma physics.
